 From Africa to America to Butler Island Plantation
“All lives, equally, should matter; and all lives will matter when Black lives matter, too” Due to Hurricane Ian we had reschedule this event to October 22, 2022. On Saturday, October 22, 2022 from 11:00 a.m.--2:00 p.m., the public is invited to the Historic Butler Island Plantation to commemorate an incredible piece of American History that had nearly been forgotten—the more than 900 enslaved men, women and children who endured and persevered under the harsh chains of man's inhumanity to man. This will be our 2nd Annual Butler Island Day Commemoration. Having been turned into human property, more than 400 of these souls were then liquidated in Savannah to settle the gambling debts of Pierce Butler, becoming what is now known as “The Weeping Time”--the largest sale of human beings in America's history. We are bringing this historical event to the very home of the enslaved of The Weeping Time—the sacred ground where they walked, labored, loved and survived. Speakers will include Butler Island Descendants Queen Mother Eunice Moore and Darien City Councilman and Historian, Dr. Griffin Lotson; Cultural Documentarian Servant Emannu'el Branch; and keynote historian, all the way from Ghana, West Africa—Dr. Kwesi DeGraft Hanson. A local restaurant and food vendor will be onsite with a menu. This event is free to attend and includes a no-cost walking tour on Butler Island. You don't want to miss this historical moment. We encourage our guests to wear masks. Social distancing will be practiced. Organizers: BHBP Institute and The Geechee Gullah Heritage Cultural Committee of Darien working together to bring Cultural Diversity, Education and Preservation to Butler Island. It's here that you get to join us on our positive and Bible-based mission to research, analyze, document and interpret the long history of Butler Island as it relates to the unrighteousness of slavery, systemic racism, profiling, hatred and biases enacted upon Africans in America. The end goal is take this curated data to educate and inspire change throughout the world--town by town, city by city, state by state and so on. No group wants to be marginalized and vilified by another group. We all want to be treated with human decency and mutual respect. This is core mission of the Butler Island Day Institute.
